Jaded by experiences in war zones and a recent breakup, a 50-year-old Parisian physician, Loran Bonnardot, attempts to permanently leave his old life behind and settle on Tristan da Cunha, the world’s most isolated inhabited island. But navigating a year-long probationary period — before the island’s 230-person council votes to accept or reject his permanent residency — will not be easy.
